Tags in RefWorks

Tags are a simple but powerful way to organize and find references. They are custom keywords or labels which can be added to references and act as searchable descriptors.

Tags in RefWorks

Tags help to:

  • Group related references (e.g., “systematic review,” “AI,” “clinical trials”).
  • Find references quickly by searching or filtering using those keywords.
  • Organize across folders (a reference can belong to multiple tags at once).

Add tags when creating or editing a reference, or in bulk to multiple references.

Click a tag to see all references with that tag or search/filter in a Project using tags.

When importing references (e.g., via Save to RefWorks, RIS file, or direct export), “import tags” refers to keywords or subject terms that come from the source and are saved as tags on the reference.
Many databases include a Keywords field (e.g., RIS tag KW). RefWorks imports those keywords and stores them as Tags on the reference.

Tags are only imported if they exist in the source data
